That depends on what your definition of “potty trained” is. Many children can learn to use the toilet reliably when prompted after a few days however it can take months before the whole process is completely automated in most children.

Until then, accidents are common. Don’t be discouraged by this and remain as patient as possible with your child. It’s not realistic to expect that your child will be able to stay clean and dry 100% of the time right off the bat.

That said, it’s counterproductive to keep your child in training pants to avoid messes. This only delays the process. Know that dirty underpants will become less and less frequent as the weeks go by and try to keep a sense of humor about the whole thing. In a few years it will all be a memory.
