Koans point to our immediate awareness before we categorize what we are experiencing. Reality is right in front of us and needs no description. It is our trying to jam reality into neat peg holes that distorts the very reality we profess to be talking about. In The Iron Flute a series of Zen koans are presented for us to work with and each koan is accompanied by a couple of commentaries so that we may see the way a bit clearer, but make no mistake working with and understanding a koan is not picking up a brush and painting reality the color we want it to be. Understanding a koan is letting it be with us and in us all the time until we become one with the koan itself, only then can we truly know its reality.
