The number of foreign students wanting to study in the United States has increased over the years. Despite the strict rules and laws being updated every now and then, going to the US to study is still very much an option for foreign students. Take note however that finances play a major role in your application for a student visa unless you are a scholar supported by an individual or organizations.
Please take note of the following before applying for a F-1 student visa:
• Fill-up the necessary application form which is downloadable in US immigration websites.
• Select where do you intend to study and live in the United States of America
• Study the street and gather information as much as you can about the school and the intended place where to live before your intended date of departure.
• Choose the type of school according to your need such as: University, College, Graduate School, ESL (English as Second Language) academies and Vocational or technical schools.
• Contact the school for information and start the process of application.
• Most schools require a standard Test before you can even start the application; to test the English ability or any required test set by the institution and or schools. Most tests are now made available online. Some schools require telephone interview if the applicant is not yet in the United States. It is advisable to rehearse answering possible questions during the interview.
• Upon acceptance by the school, you will be issued an l-20 form (The required official document you need to apply for F-1 Student Visa.
• You can apply for a student visa at the U.S embassy or consulate in your country. If and when you are already in the United States, you may be allowed for a change of status as a student depending on the rules under your original for entry.
• You may be legally allowed to work in the United States while doing your study; however, a student’s number of working hours will be pre determined by relevant officers depending on what the latest immigration rules are.
• Be aware of the expiration of your visa and get prepared for documents needed if any need to change status arises. It is always better to inform immigration officials for a change of addresses and any circumstances while in the United States of America as a student.
